Mapping ecosystem services: New method shows seed dispersal pathways of hornbills

Frankfurt am Main, Germany, April 8th, 014. A new study highlights the central role played by trumpeter hornbills in the preservation of South African forests by acting as seed carriers. Scientists of the German LOEWE Biodiversity and Climate Research Centre (BiK-F) and the Max Planck Institute for Ornithology analyzed this ecosystem service in detail using new methods. It was thus possible for the first time to map the possible routes in which seeds are carried between forest patches. The study also unveiled that certain tree species may probably better adapt to climate change thanks to the birds. Key elements are habitat patches that are critical stepping stones for the birds pathways. The study was recently published online in Journal of Applied Ecology.
