Scientific working fields

Taxonomy, systematics, morphology, phylogeny, and zoogeography of decapod crustaceans. Main geographic areas: North Sea, Red Sea and Gulf of Aden (deep sea), and eastern Asian seas (China, Japan). Main systematic interest in brachyuran crabs with special emphasis on terrestrial and semiterrestrial taxa of the tropics and deep sea. Interest in marine ecology, especially of the North Sea and the deep sea of the world ocean including hydrothermal vent ecosystems.

Professional experience

- 1964-1974 collaborator of Crustacea Section of Senckenberg Natural History Museum and Research Institute.
- 1974-November 30, 1976 first assistant grade at same institution.
- From 1967 on scientific research on the taxonomy of Crustacea Decapoda parallel to university studies.
- Since November 30, 1976 Curator of Crustacea, head of Crustacea Section at the Senckenberg Research Institute.
- Since August 1, 1989 Head of the Department of Invertebrate Zoology at the Senckenberg Research Institute.
- Since July 1, 1997 vice director for science of the Senckenberg research institute.
- Since January 1, 2002 science director
- Since July 19, 2007 Member of Board of Directors of the SGN
