22.3. The Frankfurt Zoological Society Gast @ BiK-F: Special Lecture by Prof. Dr. Douglas Yu (University of East Anglia, UK): "OccupyManu and BiodiversitySoup: Being clever about bushmeat hunting and using technology to monitor biodiversity" (in english)
The first part of the talk will highlight new proposals to resolve people-park conflict in Manu National Park, Peru. In the second part, Prof. Yu discusses how to use metagenetics to accelerate biodiversity measurement and presents applications to climate-change monitoring, restoration ecology, and systematic conservation planning. Douglas Yu is a well known ecologist and has worked on a variety of topics best described by himself: "I am interested in the ecology and evolution of cooperation. One part of my work concerns cooperation between species, or mutualisms. Most recently, my colleagues and I are applying the economic theory of mechanism design to mutualism theory. The other part concerns cooperation between humans and nature, or conservation. Here, my colleagues and I are designing methods to manage wild meat (or bushmeat) hunting in Amazonia, and working out a protocol to measure biodiversity rapidly at large scales. Metabarcoding und biodiversity assessments are also part of my research interests." Review: International Symposium: Genomic Adaptation to Ecological Niches 12.10.2012, Frankfurt a.M. One-day symposium to discuss current projects and common interests in the rapidly expanding field of adaptive genomics of ecological niches. The symposium is organized by the project area D (Laboratory Centre & Adaptive Genomics) of the BiK-F centre and is aimed at everyone, student to professor, interested in this rapidly expanding field. This event aimed to bring together scientists and students interested in the research field of macroecology. High-profile researchers like Miguel B. Araújo (Museo Nacional de Ciencias Naturales, Madrid, Spain & University of Évora, Portugal) or Carsten Rahbek (Center for Macroecology, Evolution and Climate, University of Copenhagen, Denmark) had been invited as keynote speakers.
