E2.1: VEGETATION DYNAMICS AND ECOSYSTEM PROCESSES

Research focus

I am a vegetation modeller, which means I use, modify and write computer programs to simulate past, current and future projected vegetation distribution. I apply and adjust the dynamic global vegetation model LPJ-GUESS on various spatial scales from the stand scale of a local oak stand near Frankfurt (in collaboration with the group of Wolfgang Brüggemann), through continental scale (e.g. simulating the potential distribution of Ambrosia artemisiifolia) to the global scale (e.g. drought-induced forest dieback). The scientific foci currently are species specific simulations and validation, as well as understanding various processes (e.g. forest establishment/mortality/dieback, Carbon and Nitrogen cycling, climate-change impacts).
Furthermore I am also interested in the cycling of other nutrients and trace gas emissions in the terrestrial biosphere as well as atmospheric chemistry, which I've been working on during my PhD.

Teaching

During the summer semester I teach together with Christian Werner the course “Fernerkundung globale Ökologie” (Remote sensing of global ecology) in the Geography Department of the Goethe-University of Frankfurt. We use R and MODIS satellite data to teach the script language R and interpreting the results. In 2016 I started advising/supervising Bsc and Msc students.
