9-2.5 | INSTITUTION-CENTRED STRATEGIC ENVIRONMENTAL ASSESSMENT OF COASTAL ZONE MANAGEMENT IN YEMEN

Project leader:
Uwe Zajonz

Yemen is among the poorest countries in the world. Its coastal zones host a wealth of natural resources which may help the country attaining its Millennium Development Goal targets. However, a number of pressures, notably population growth and climate change, threaten the coastal social-ecological systems. An Institution-centred Strategic Environmental Assessment (I-SEA) was conducted on behalf of the Ministry of Water and Environment of the Republic of Yemen and the World Bank with the aim to ensure that Coastal Zone Management (CZM) in Yemen will be undertaken in the future within a broader sustainability-oriented and integrated development policy.

The Project forms part of the research programme of the integrated work group “Tropical Marine Systems” (see F5.1).

The current state of the Project is summarized here. The project will resume activities in the 2nd phase of LOEWE BiK-F. Initial results will be subjected to stakeholder scrutiny, refined during participatory feed-back loops and fed into the policy making dialogue. Several projects led by World Bank and the Government of Yemen (Pilot Programme for Climate Resilience, PPCR; GEF Yemen ICZM) are expected to tap its results in the near future.
