Adaptation potential of the calanoid copepod Acartia tonsa to multiple environmental stressors

The euryhaline, eurytherm copepod Acartia tonsa plays an important role in many marine food webs as a grazer on phytoplankton and an important prey species for commercially-important fishes. The different populations of this cosmopolitan species experience a wide range of environmental conditions. This study aims to elucidate the adaptation potential of A. tonsa to multiple environmental stressors. The impact of interactive manipulations of temperature and salinitiy on vital rates (reproduction, survival and growth) of an A. tonsa population originating from marine (33 psu) waters of the North Sea is tested in laboratory experiments to show potential influences of climate-driven changes in environmental conditions on its life cycle and population dynamics. The investigation of a North Sea population compared to geographically separated populations from the brackish Baltic waters and the warmer Portuguese waters will give information about whether an intra-specific variability in the potential to adapt to stressors might be caused by phenotypic plasticity or genetic variability.
