L-3: DEVELOPMENT OF MOLECULAR METHODS FOR THE ROUTINE IDENTIFICATION OF ORGANISMS

The bottleneck in environmental monitoring with high numbers of samples, typical for long-term monitoring projects, as well as for the diagnostic detection of medically relevant biodiversity, is the necessary taxonomic identification of the collected samples. It is time consuming, costly and depends in its quality largely on the experience and availability of highly qualified personnel. Automated methods of DNA taxonomy can provide relief. One possibility is high-throughput DNA barcoding which, however, still requires the manual processing of each individual sample. An alternative is the development of taxonomic DNA-high-throughput methods.

This project we aim to developed a high throughput sequencing protocol based on the 454 next generation seqeuncing technology for practical application.
