8-1.4 | CLIMATE INDUCED GEOGRAPHIC RANGE CHANGES OF LINEAGES AND CANDIDATE GENES FOR FROST TOLERANCE IN THE SPURGE HAWKMOTH IN EUROPE (2008-2011)

Spurge hawkmoths have a wide distribution, with one mitochondrial lineage occurring in Europe and another in North Africa. Genetic studies have now detected elements of the genome of the North African “species” in southern regions of Spain, Italy and Greece. A hybrid zone between the two species has been described on Malta and recent studies show that hybrids also occur as far north as Rome in Italy.

Due to the popularity of the spurge hawkmoths as a result of their strong and variable coloration, size and comparatively easy captive breeding, numerous individuals have been deposited in European museums. This extensive material represents a biological archive from which we expect to document of the northward movement of the hybrid zone. Comparison of ”ancient-DNA” from historical specimens and current changes of haplotype composition will allow shifts in distribution ranges to be traced.
